The pancreatic surgery department, led by Prof. Yu Xianjun (虞先濬) and Dr. Xu Xiaowu (徐晓武), is a national leader in minimally invasive pancreatic surgery.

Pancreatic Surgery Highlights

  • Over 1,000 Whipple procedures per year — among the highest volumes globally
  • 80%+ minimally invasive rate (laparoscopic and robotic)
  • 20%+ of cases involve vascular resection & reconstruction — demonstrating mastery of complex cases
  • Live-streamed laparoscopic Whipple demonstrations at the 36th Italian Digestive Surgery Congress (Milan, 2025), earning international praise as "textbook-level"
  • Innovated "middle approach laparoscopic Whipple" (Leave the Vein Alone concept) — reducing blood loss and complications
  • Pancreatic duct-mucosa double-layer anastomosis technique for safer reconstruction

Equipment & Technology

  • Da Vinci surgical robot system
  • Proton and heavy ion therapy (integrated with Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center)
  • PET-CT, PET-MR, 5.0T MRI — 22 high-end imaging devices
  • National drug clinical trial institution — hundreds of active oncology trials
  • AI-powered precision oncology platform

Clinical Trials & Innovation

  • 695 new clinical trials in 2025 alone (75% investigator-initiated)
  • National Natural Science Foundation: 100 projects funded in 2025
  • Published 35 papers with IF ≥ 20 in top journals including BMJ and Nature
  • Clinical research funding: ~600M RMB/year
  • 17 international guideline changes per year — shaping global oncology standards

International Recognition

  • Cooperation agreements with 10+ institutions in France, Italy, Japan, Russia, Singapore
  • Top A rating in national hospital performance for oncology — consistently
  • Sister department relationship with UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (Miami)
Why international patients choose FUSCC: The sheer surgical volume (3,000+ complex cases/year) means the team encounters rare and difficult presentations weekly that other centers see yearly. This depth of experience is the single strongest predictor of surgical outcomes.
